UN Environment staff read to St Anne’s Primary School students

On Tuesday, May 7, staff members of the Secretariat to the Cartagena Convention and the UN Environment Caribbean Subregional Office (CSRO) joined members of the public and private sector in Jamaica in taking part in the annual Read Across Jamaica Day activity. This year, UN Environment-CEP staff read to students in Grades 2MF and 5 at the St Anne’s Primary School in downtown Kingston.

The young minds were captivated as they learnt about the importance of protecting our oceans and ocean life and the harmful impact of pollution on the marine environment. They also actively engaged with their guest narrators as they talked about helpful ways to protect the environment, which included finding alternative uses for items instead of throwing them away, recycling plastic bottles, and what they can do to conserve natural resources, such as conserving water.

The activity ended with a presentation of books to the school, which was accepted by the guidance counsellor, Arlene Dale. Read Across Jamaica is an international literacy initiative that seeks to cultivate a love for reading in children.

The activity was coordinated by UNICEF Jamaica.
