This piece portrays the theme of mutilation. It sends a message about death and sadness. This reminds us of slavery, when Nanny of the Maroon was alive and the slaves had no mind of their own. Mutilation was a form of punishment done to slaves by their masters. However, they rarely survived this cruel act. The texture of the sculpture is rough and rigid, which represents emotional and physical scars.
This artwork portrays a carnival theme. Bright colours are usually associated with carnival, so using different techniques to represent these in the artwork was a great addition. It therefore sends a message about excitement and entertainment.

The Jamaican hummingbird is truly a beautiful creature. There are approximately 320 different species, and they all are beautiful. The Tainos called them the ‘God Bird’ because they thought that they were reincarnations of the dead.

Shemar Bernard, a student at Foga Road High School, is exceedingly passionate about becoming a successful, renowned artist. Bernard talked about being a creative and passionate student.

He is responsible for many of the stunning art pieces that stretch along Block E, captivating any and all who behold them.

“Art was and still is my life,” he said.

“I consider art as everything around us. Reflecting on pieces I’ve done, I’ve seen major improvement in the maturity of my work. I started out by drawing cartoons I saw in The Gleaner and drawing posters and flyers for people in my community, which led to me becoming a nascent entrepreneur at the age of 10. I saw myself as the only 10-year-old with the mindset of a businessman,” said Shemar.

“I’ve been doing art since the day I first held a pencil. I realised that I felt compelled to reproduce every form of art I saw in The Gleaner. At that age, I was unlike every other child who entertained themselves with drawing, games, and films; however, at the end of the day, art is still my life,” he said.
