Texaco donates math supplies to schools across Jamaica

GB Energy-Texaco Jamaica has donated J$1.1 million worth of resources to 11 schools across the island. The evaluation for the adjudication of these awards was done in conjunction with the Texaco Dealer Council led by Derrick Thompson, former president of the Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association.

The schools are:

1. Grange Hill Primary School – Westmoreland

2. Victoria Primary School – St Catherine

3. Dinthill Technical High School – St Catherine

4. Black River High School – St Elizabeth

5. Titchfield High School – Portland

6. Chetwood Primary School – St James

7. Exchange All Age School – St Ann

8. Bellefield High School – Manchester

9. Mountain View Primary School – Kingston

10. John Mills Infant, Primary and Junior High School – Kingston

11. August Town Primary School – Kingston

The initiative is part of the company’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2019 and is in line with its commitment to continue to support community development and growth through education. Following conversations with the Ministry of Education, led by National Mathematics Coordinator Dr Tamika Benjamin, the decision was made to donate mathematics resources. The long-term goal of the Ministry of Education is for each school to have a lab dedicated solely to mathematics.

THANKFUL

Speaking at the presentation ceremony on September 30 at the August Town Primary School, which received J$100,000 worth of resources, Minister of Education, Youth and Information, and Member of Parliament for the St Andrew Eastern Constituency, where the school is located, Fayval Williams, said, “This is a wonderful, generous gift, and we are thankful to Texaco Jamaica.”

She added, “We continue to struggle in the area of mathematics, and it is our hope that more companies in corporate Jamaica can work with us to assist in raising the scores.”

CEO of GB Energy-Texaco Jamaica Bela Szabo, said: “It was only fitting for us that we would give back to our local communities, in celebration of this significant anniversary, because it is only through their support that we are here today. We chose to focus on education because it is our hope that by supporting the youth of today, we will help to fuel the foundations of their success tomorrow,” Szabo said.

The required resources were identified by each school using an official list provided by the Ministry of Education.
