TransJam sees uptick in traffic volumes, reverses QI losses

TransJamaican Highway Limited is looking ahead to better business. Managing Director Ivan Anderson says he’s encouraged that traffic volumes are back up, enough to turn a small first quarter profit.
“It’s a good start because, for the first time our traffic volume is up in March over last year. That for us represents green shoots,” he said.
Traffic rose from 1.72 million vehicles for March 2020 to 1.83 Million vehicles for March 2021, reflecting a 6.83 per cent increase.
Revenue also increased by 5.6 per cent.
Anderson says while TransJamaican can’t predict what will happen regarding lockdowns, he expects the uptick to continue, as more persons get vaccinated against the virus and daily infection rates trend down.
“We take some comfort from the downward trajectory of the pandemic. Schools are reopening, albeit limited,” he said.
“We are cautiously optimistic. The issue of COVID-19 will be critical. How the country as a whole respond to that will determine the amount of traffic that we see on the highway,” he added.
For the March first quarter, TransJamaican made a profit of US$0.6 million on $US$12.28 million in revenue, reversing losses of US$1.5 million in the March 2020 period.
