David Green | Not easy being gay in Jamaica

We have heard the constant concerns from the masses on why are we pushing this ‘gay agenda’. And, as has been personally asked of me, why don’t you seek to go to a country that is more accepting and supportive of your ‘lifestyle’? Among other suggestions that people think is a magical gift that can be granted.
Truth be told, this is always in response to the obvious reasons as to why we ask for equality. If every one of us could leave, I’m positive that just by the snap of a finger we would. So we have no choice but to ask that everyone address our concerns, and for everyone to consider and value us first as human beings.
It is not easy to be gay and living in a country that views you as being immoral or something out of the norm. Just the other day, on December 20, 2019, I received threats and I am now seeking to move from where I am. This is just one example of the many I have faced here. However, with a lack of resources to help me with my burden, I just have to do what I can.
In fact, recently, a very good pal of mine was attacked on public transportation while on his way home, simply for being perceived as gay.
HOMOPHOBIA IS REAL
Rest assured, homophobia is alive and well, despite what has been said, and it should be addressed!
We preach about equality for all but in reality, it seems as though equality is for the privileged and those among us who are well off and seemingly entitled. So what’s good exactly about being in a country that considers us to be secondary to non-existent?
Of course, we may preach that we have better things to consider as well as talk about; however, this topic is as important as most, as it affects us, who are legitimate citizens of this country.
As said before, we are, first and foremost, human beings. We may love differently, however, our hearts beat just as any other.
So I am begging the Government to address and put legislation in place so that we also may have a place in Jamaica to call home.
