The musical styles in Dr Peter Phillips’ playlist are all over the place, from the nostalgic sounds of Bob Marley and The Wailers to new-era reggae and dancehall. Chronixx, Koffee, Dre Island, and Teejay +re not hitmakers who the People’s National Party presidential candidate, 69 (turning 70 in December), grew up on, yet he relates to the lyrics of the rising stars while occasionally dipping back into the classic oldies.

1. Pass It On - The Wailers

2. No Woman No Cry – Bob Marley

3. Greetings – Half Pint

4. Did You Stop To Pray – Sandra Brooks

5. I Can – Chronixx

6. Toast – Koffee

7. We Pray – Dre Island featuring Popcaan

8. Hills and Valleys – Buju Banton

9. Owna Lane – Teejay

10. Putting Up Resistance – Beres Hammond

“Ten tracks is a hard number to settle on,” Dr Phillips stated, but he didn’t bend the rules.

Speaking of his musical tastes, he added, “I listen to all kinds of music (ten tracks does not give it any justice) from the Skatalites and Third World a bit of jazz et cetera.”

The message in the tracks, old and not-so-old, speaks to momentum, with its final number, Beres Hammond’s Putting Up Resistance, echoing in the distance.
