Be Like Us, the track from singjay Black Mattic’s 2018 Press Play album, has gained special attention since being featured on the soundtrack of the 2019 Goldie.

The movie’s main character, Goldie, is described as “a precocious teenager in a family shelter who wages war against the system to keep her sisters together while she pursues her dream of being a dancer. It is a movie about displaced youth, ambition, and maintaining your spirit in the face of insurmountable obstacles.” Slick Woods, Rihanna’s favourite fashion model, makes her feature film debut as lead actress in this Sam De Jong’s production. Goldie also won the Best Film in Generation 14plus at the Berlin International Film Festival.

According to Black Mattic, his song, Be Like Us, speaks about hardships faced in the ghetto and everyone wanting to be like the residents but never experiencing the struggles of the ghetto life. He noted that the song being used in the movie has added value to his catalogue.

“Being able to be a part of this movie soundtrack has added a major milestone to my career. This isn’t my first feature on a movie soundtrack, but this one was more meaningful because it shows that music speaks a universal language, and, more importantly, we have similar struggles,” he told T he Gleaner.

The artiste, who is currently promoting the Black Mattic Top Striker Mixtape Vol. 2, says he will be launching some new singles in the coming months while expanding his audience reach in Latin and North America.

Emerging from Waterhouse, ‘the music capital’ located in Kingston 11, Black Mattic ventured into music due to his early exposure from his family members. Between 2010 and 2012, Black Mattic released a series of independent mixtape projects, namely Purple Touch, Frass Out, and Kingston 11.

In 2012, he released the 12-track album, titled Hot Grabba, which found success with the single Never Give Up peaking at 25 on Spain’s iTunes Top 100 list. The remastered version for this album was released in 2016.

In 2013, Black Mattic gained international recognition after releasing his hit single, Super Star. The video, which was produced by MTV’s Mike Leonard, racked up over one million views worldwide. Determined to pursue a career as an international recording artiste, this was the fuel he needed to propel him to the next level.
