Reggae artistes Bugle, Kabaka Pyramid, and Jesse Royal have joined forces to deliver a powerful track that they hope will influence people to be the agents of change that the world needs. The song, Change The World, was released just over a week ago and was inspired by death, according to writer and producer Bugle. In an interview with The Gleaner, Bugle said that having witnessed the worldwide outrage caused by the death of US citizen George Floyd back in May, he knew that he had to lend his voice to the fight against systemic racism and advocate for change in some way.

“This song was inspired by black life and Rasta life worldwide, from Leonard Percival Howell to George Floyd. The death of every innocent black man on this Earth affects me personally because injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere. They didn’t take his (George Floyd’s) life because he was an African American, but because he’s a BLACK man,” he said, pointing out that music may be the only tool that helps to bring about active change where racism is concerned.

“I learnt a lot from listening to music, and I know that music alone shall live, so we definitely need to be using music as education. With that said, more message music is always needed because good music grows on people.”

GOOD CAUSE

Agreeing with Bugle, Jesse Royal said that when he was approached by the Rasta Party singer, he did not hesitate to lend his voice to the cause. He said that he, too, was deeply affected by the death of George Floyd. “It’s a reminder of how a lot of individuals still perceive us (black people), and so when Bugle reached out, it was truly a no-brainer,” he said, also indicating that he believed that music could help foster change. “I definitely do not want to have to keep singing songs like this, but we sing them now in hopes of change in the future. My brothers Bugle and Kabaka did an excellent job, and the people feel the unity and the clarity in the conversation.”

In his interview, Kabaka Pyramid said that he knew from the get-go that the Change The World track would be powerful. He said that while he didn’t subscribe to the Black Lives Matter movement because he didn’t know who was “manipulating it for different agendas”, he agreed with the statement that black lives matter. “When Bugle played the song, I immediately felt the energy and impact and knew it would be something powerful if we could unify around it and the message. Anytime three Rasta youth link up, is a problem inna Babylon,” he said, expressing gratitude to those who have been supporting the track so far.

“I know the song will inspire many ones to change their mindset towards wah gwaan ya now in the world. We love all who support the song and our music in general – awakening music, reality music. To those who don’t support, we give thanks same way.”
