Kelly's World | Me and the ‘politricks’ a nuh fren

In my columns, I usually stay away from the ‘politricks’, especially since I don’t have a vote.

This finger neva go inna nuh ink yet, and to be totally honest, I’m not sure when it will.

I’ve only ever voted, to the best of my recollection, in two elections. One was for student council president at dear old Ardenne High.

I must not have given it much thought (or my memory is getting foggy) because I remember who won, but I don’t remember who I voted for.

The only other time I voted was during my third year at The University of the West Indies, Mona.

I really wasn’t into that election either, apparently because the only thing I remember is that the candidate I voted for didn’t win.

Do I remember the post the person was running for? Nope. But he was a dude I knew from where I used to hang out on the campus. So mi did a try help him out.

So when you hear me say I’m really not into the whole politicking thing, I mean it.

So all this hubbub over East Portland, to be contested by the JLP’s Ann-Marie Vaz and the PNP’s Damion Crawford, has been somewhat funny, and somewhat annoying.

To be fair, even if I was a member of the electorate, I still wouldn’t have a vote because the closest I come to affiliation with Portland is jerk pork, and I’ve been to a few beaches. That’s it.

I passed both JLP and PNP supporters on their way back from their respective rallies in Port Antonio.

That’s probably the closest I plan to get to this election (other than this column).

I’m pretty certain that half of the people who went to the rallies have no clue what the East Portland divisions are.

Heck, I’m in the media and before a friend of mine actually showed me a constituency map, I didn’t know the divisions.

ANNOYED

So it annoys me greatly that people are killing up dem self over this seat and that politicians are putting their feet right squarely in their mouths on the platform.

Another thing, am I the only one wondering how these two ended up as the candidates? Hear me out. I got no beef with either of them, I’m just saying.

If the by-election was being held in a place that many people talk about daily, like maybe some parts of the Corporate Area, I might not feel so annoyed.

As for the rabid cheering from supporters? Well, Jamaicans love political rallies and other election-related events as much as Trinis love playing mas.

Even though I’m pretty sure I made it clear at the top of this column, let me cement it; I have no political affiliation.

But if I had a vote I think I would go with the dread ’cause at least he’s been an MP before.

But hey, what do I know? I’m the guy who can’t remember the two elections he actually voted in.

Pass mi jerk pork and an ice cold beer; I’ll watch this one on TV.
