Going Green is a holistic venture which is currently trending globally. People are becoming more mindful of the ingredients found in the food they eat, skin and hair products, and even the type of fabric that they wear. With this new sense of mindfulness, several young entrepreneurs are starting to create their own products from scratch. The simplicity of the process and the 100% natural ingredients are the key components in what most consumers are looking for today.

Flair discovered ‘The Bar’ at the Women’s Expo held earlier this month. The Bar is a green-beauty movement that promotes products and brands that consider both human and environmental health. “Everything is handmade right here in Jamaica with the use of a wide variety of natural resources, such as vegetables, fruits, and nut oils as the base for cold-processed soaps,” explained founder of The Bar, Roejan Allen.

Each bar is enhanced with local herbs and spices providing colour and texture, combined with essential oils which accentuate the aroma of the products. “Our business is informed by research on the art and science of soap making and the traditional “bush medicines” of Jamaica. The island’s lush landscape and tropical climate is ideal for growing herbs, and today Jamaica is home to more than 300 varieties of medicinal plants!” she exclaimed.

Allen is a firm believer of the power of knowing the different ingredients and the processes used to create the products intended for the skin. “I think the products you put on your body should be as pure as what you put in it,” she stated. The Bar’s soaps come in many wonderful hues, but are definitely “green”. “We use no synthetic or unnatural preservatives or petroleum products in our soaps, and we only test our products on willing members of the public, never on animals,” explained Allen.

In aligning with its green constitution all products from The Bar are chemical-free, biodegradable, pure and safe. “Our first choices are “Certified Organic” products from reliable local sources,” said Allen.

The Bar has a plethora of soaps which include Aloe Vera and Cerasse, Sulphur, Neem, Tumeric, Black Soap, Noni, Tea Tree Oil, Papaya, Moringa, Shea Butter, Nutmeg, Garlic, Carrot, Marigold, Guinea Hen Weed, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Eucalyptus, Cornmeal and Cucumber and Rosemary. Each bar of soap takes 24 hours to harden and 4 weeks to cure before it is ready for use.
