Summer, the best season, the reason to pull out those swimsuits and indulge in every beach activity, whether it be day or night. But it is also the hottest season and we definitely need to remember to go bottoms up with those water bottles.

Health coach Natalie Murray, tells FOOD, that when it comes to water, it is important and needed for every metabolic process in your body.

When it comes to water intake, the minimum amount one should drink daily, is half their body weight in ounces, according to Murray.

"So if you weigh 150 pounds, then you should drink 75 ounces. However, in the summer when it is hot, I recommend an added 10 per cent, so let's call that 85 ounces. Then if you go to the gym, you have to replace your minutes of cardio in ounces.

So if you work out for 40 minutes, then you drink an added 40 ounces. That leaves you at 125 ounces, which is 2 and a half bottles of the 1.5-litre bottles," she explained.

misconceptions

There are a few misconceptions, however, when it comes to one's water intake. While it is great to complement your water intake with water foods and fruits since it is summer, these (fruits and vegetables) can by no means, make up for drinking adequate water.

"You won't get enough. You cannot replace drinking water with eating fruits. Yes, watermelons and cucumbers are good for you, but you need actual water. So I recommend to my clients that they get the fruit and put it in the water.

Have fruit-infused water, so it is easier to drink, if you naturally don't like to drink water," she tells Food.

Murray also wanted to address the alkaline water fad. It is now a trend for some to drink alkaline water and while she admits that it does have its benefits, she cautions not to overdo it. Drinking only alkaline water will change the PH of your stomach, lowering the acidity.

"The stomach is acidic, because it needs to be to digest protein. Too much alkaline water will change the PH of your stomach, resulting in digestive issues," she added. Thus everything in moderation.

While you enjoy your beach days and the sun in all its radiating glory, do not forget to grab your water bottle.
