Living sweet with Spec-tacular Cakes

American writer Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.” Echoing this oh so sweet sentiment with all things cake is the lovely Trevica Tulloch.

The cake connoisseur explained that she has always been passionate about baking and decorating cakes. She explained to Food, “Since I was introduced to baking in high school and started watching baking championship programmes on Food Network, I just felt an instant connection, like this is what I was meant to do.”

Since then, Tulloch put plans in place to live in the sweet lane. It was there that she created Spec-tacular Cakes. So why be Spec-tacular? According to the entrepreneur, after brainstorming one day with a friend and throwing some ideas around, she declared that the name of her business needed to showcase who she was. “I’ve worn glasses all my life so they said how about Spectacular SPEC for specs, seeing that I wear glasses. The name Spectacular describes exactly how my business should be, so the name just stuck.”

OFFERINGS

Today, she provides totally sweet cakes, cupcakes and cake pops for almost any celebratory or special event you can think of: birthdays, baby showers, gender reveal, anniversaries, graduations, and more. You name it, she will make it Spec-tacular.

Customers, she says, tend to respond or show interest once she runs a campaign ad on Facebook or Instagram. But for her, while the decor and presentation go a long way in impressing both clients and guests, the taste is at the helm of her sweet business. “My cakes are baked with natural ingredients from scratch. This is very important to me as many Jamaicans are now moving into healthy eating. The less harm done to your body the happier people will be,” she said.

With inspiration from Pinterest and Instagram, she works closely with her clients to perfect their requests. One of her most memorable cakes to date is the very first order she received a year ago. Self-taught, Tulloch took on the cake challenge of creating gravity-defying M&M’s Cake. She watched YouTube for hours trying to get a specific technique and, in the end, her clients loved it. Depending on the complexity of the design, it can take between two to five days to complete an order.

She hopes to continue her quest to perfect her skills while building and maintaining client relationships. “I do hope to open my ‘cakery’ shop within the next five years,” she said.
