Soft, light and blissfully sweet. If you’ve missed the random pop ups in Kingston and St Catherine or weren’t able to camp out for the official opening at Waterloo Road over the weekend, and you still haven’t had your fill of the newest sweet sensation to hit the city’s pastry scene, ‘doughnut worry’. Krispy Kreme already has plans in store to carry the baked delights right to your footsteps.

“Krispy Kreme is all about spreading joy and providing sweet moments. So, pretty soon, we will be able to use this factory to deliver to different supermarkets and gas stations in and around Kingston,” Lisa Lake, group chief executive officer of Lake Group of Companies, told Food.

And for those wondering, there are local flavours on the horizon as well. “We have already gotten approval from Krispy Kreme to start introducing some local flavours. So we want to hear from you. We’re going to poll our customers and try to get some ideas. We’re making everything fresh here so we can get creative,” Lake added. Until then, the bakery is focused promoting its existing tantalising taste profiles.

The original glazed, otherwise called the OG, is signature for good reasons. Receiving the baked goodness, hot and fresh from the oven at the launch held last week Wednesday, I wanted to see what the hype was all about. While I am not a big fan of sweet treats, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by its light and airy nature.

Noting that all the flavours are great, Lake also highly recommends the caramel kreme crunch. Other fun and sweet varieties include the chocolate iced glazed, chocolate iced glazed with sprinkles, strawberry iced glazed with sprinkles, chocolate iced custard filled, chocolate iced kreme filled, glazed strawberry filled, chocolate iced strawberry filled, maple iced glazed, original filled kreme and strawberry cheesecake. In addition to the glazed goodness in store, Krispy Kreme also stocks hot and cold coffee beverages, as well as fruit-flavoured chillers.

As the parent company of Restaurant Associates of Jamaica, home to Burger King, Popeye’s and Little Caesar’s Pizza, the team at Lake Group of Companies realised that locals are big at celebrating life, so it was only fitting to introduce Krispy Kreme to the island.

“We’ve been engaging in a significant growth campaign all around the world. And there seemed to be persons who liked a bit of sweetness. The Krispy Kreme team in the United States weren’t sure if Jamaicans would go crazy over the doughnuts, and members have since eaten their words, because the turnout and excitement has gone beyond our wildest expectations,” the director of Restaurant Associates of Jamaica shared.

For over a week prior to opening, the international pastry king did approximately five drops per day, all across Kingston and St Catherine to persons who have never tasted or experienced Krispy Kreme before. Creating that unique merriment, the team rolled out the red carpet for specially invited guests at the official launch last Wednesday, before entertaining droves of doughnut lovers bright and early Saturday morning. Prizes were given to the first one hundred customers in line.

So what’s next? “We will definitely be opening at least one more store in Kingston before the end of the year. And we have a number of openings planned subsequent to that,” Lake responded.
