When Jhanelle Golding became vegan in 2015, there was but a handful of resources available to her for recipes and just general support in her new life journey. After three years of trial and error she found her footing and decided to share her new wealth of knowledge on an Instagram account-turned-blog: From The Comfort of My Bowl. Now five years later, amid a global pandemic and several food fads, Golding is not just hanging on; she’s actively working to diversify vegan food options on a global scale.

Looking back at the beginning of her journey, Golding said, “I spent that previous summer just eating chicken a lot. It was kind of weird. It was the easiest thing to cook. I was working overseas at the time and the easiest thing to find and cook while working was chicken. I got to a point that once I got back to Jamaica I was like ‘my gosh I cannot eat any more chicken’. I decided to give it up.”

Adding that at the time fish wasn’t whetting her appetite either, she quit cold turkey.

“I had always wanted to try vegetarian food because I had known people who can make really good vegetarian food and I used to envy that in a way, and I always wanted to learn. So it was part being tired of eating meet, but also wanting to learn more about how to make vegetable or plant-based ingredients taste good. It was a new challenge and honestly, I didn’t know if I was gonna do it longer than a month, but it became something that I really enjoyed; and having the blog and the Instagram [account] helped to make it even more enjoyable. I just kept at it and I’m still vegan to this day.”

Keeping herself accountable by posting recipes and other fun finds that were in line with her dietary needs, From The Comfort Of My Bowl became a treasure trove of information for the plant-based community.

Soon expanding into a second blog, ‘Surprisingly Sweet Treats’, Golding showcased her passion for baking. There, she shared recipes for cakes, cookies, muffins, and any other sweet treat she could create, all without the use of animal products.

While it was popular in its heyday, Surprisingly Sweet Treats eventually bit the dust and Golding’s love for baking soon manifested into a new platform: EasyVeganCookies.com.

Recalling the straw that broke the proverbial camel’s back she said, “That was mainly because at the time during COVID-19, the sales weren’t too bad, I was definitely getting sales but the problem was suppliers were raising their prices every week.”

Golding explained that after attempting to increase the price of her creations to keep her profit margin, it started to feel disingenuous to her followers to keep doing so.

“It just felt maybe a little unfair to have to keep raising my prices just to make a decent profit. So at that time I said, I don’t know if it’s gonna work,” she finished.

Though one website has been banished to the dark side of the net, her newest creation is meant to have all the delight and none of the fuss.

“I really like baking. It’s pretty relaxing and just a fun hobby,” she began.

“I used to do all types of baking recipes on From The Comfort Of My Bowl but I realised that the ones that people really liked were the cookies. I think it’s because people find baking to be a little intimidating, but it’s not that bad and I enjoy it. Cookies are one of those types of recipes that are easy for beginners so I’ve always wanted to have a site that is more tailored to beginners and baking [and] that cookie website is what I’m using to do that.”

Now with both From The Comfort Of My Bowl and Easy Vegan Cookies keeping her occupied, Golding says she is just happy to see veganism growing into more of a community both locally and internationally.

Imploring her global vegans she said, “Keep sharing more alternatives, not necessarily for fake meats or fake cheese or anything like that but just generally being more creative with food. There are ways to make vegan alternatives without looking for the fake alternatives, just using ingredients in such a way that really changes the taste, the texture and is just impressive in how we use our ingredients.”

As for her, she will be focusing on expanding the niche markets she has become passionate about.

She explained, “I really wanna expand on the baking niche again with the cookies website because that’s something that I’m really passionate about; and for From The Comfort Of My Bowl, I kinda wanna focus on soul food, comfort but mainly soul food. Right now I live in the US and I lived in the south for a few years and I’ve learned so much about soul food and how similar it is to even Caribbean food, and that’s just something I’ve become drawn to and wanna put more focus on.”
