Nutrition is the first victim of the holiday season. Between the parties and dinners, not to mention the numerous samples everywhere from the office to the supermarket, it is easy to start packing on the pounds even before the carols start.

The Christmas season is upon us. The countdown to fun, food, frolic, and, of course, family, has officially begun. Soon fitness will be sacrificed at the holiday altar, as we try to make the most of the season. We don't even need the numerous studies on weight and BMI gain and exercise frequency decline to tell us that this season is an enemy of fitness.

The holidays don't need to set you back a few months on your journey thought. In fact, with a little effort, you can do more than survive the season.

In this series, we will look at ways in which you can make the most of the holidays as it relates to fitness and health.

Where better to start than food.

Nutrition is the first victim of the holiday season. Between the parties and dinners, not to mention the numerous samples everywhere from the office to the supermarket, it is easy to start packing on the pounds even before the carols start.

How can you enjoy the holidays and still fit into your clothes come January?

Here's how:

DON'T HIT THE ROAD ON 'E'

Whether you are heading to a party, visiting friend and family, or doing some Christmas shopping, eat something healthy before you head out. Not only will this ensure that you have some healthy food throughout the holidays, but you are also less likely to overindulge on party fare or fast food if you aren't hungry.

VEGGIES WON'T HURT

Don't skip the salads and fruits at the buffet table. These healthy options can help you control the amount of cake and other holiday fares you consume.

SHARE THE 'CHRISMUS' CAKE

There is no need to eat the seven Christmas cakes you got from family and all the cake and pastries you get at dinners and parties. Share them with friends and family or, better, give it to someone less fortunate.

DANCE UP A STORM

Wondering what dancing has to do with nutrition? Well, not much, but the more time you spend dancing or even socialising, the less time you will spend at the buffet or the bar. And, as a bonus, you get a great exercise from all that dancing as well.

STAY HYDRATED

It's not exactly a party drink, but don't forget to fill up on water. Though you might be surrounded by sorrel and rum punch, pay keen attention to the amount of water you drink and ensure you are getting enough daily.

IT'S OKAY TO TAKE A BREAK

Don't stress over the holiday disruptions to your programme. In fact, use it as a time to reward yourself with that piece of cake or that cup of ice-cream you have avoided.

Fighting the urge to indulge could result in you breaking and eating or drinking even more than you thought possible. And, besides, don't you deserve a little holiday?
