It was pure, sweet energy at Saturday’s Season 3 launch of The Gleaner’s Fit 4 Life health and fitness initiative. The 300-strong fitness enthusiasts who turned out in the early morning at the media house’s 7 North Street, Kingston, head office to get ‘Fit in 5’ were certainly not disappointed, as Sweet Energy Fitness Club, led by boss Robert ‘Astro’ Whyte, took them through a military-style boot camp.

Along with fellow Fit 4 Life fitness partners TrainFit Wellness Club, Body By Kurt, and Yoga Wellness, the fitness trainers ensured that the season kicked off with a bang, which means the 12-week annual programme ‘tun up’.

When Fit 4 Life’s Brand Ambassador, the athletic Dr Alfred Dawes, could finally catch his breath after the hour-long boot camp, he gave the initiative the thumbs up, stating, “The Fit 4 Life programme is a most welcome opportunity to get Jamaicans from all walks of life physically active.”

Dancehall artiste Macka Diamond, looking quite fit, also gave it a ringing endorsement, able to find enough energy after the workout to deliver an impromptu performance of some of her top hits.

Thanks to sponsors Jamaica Moves, WATA, PowerAde, Foska Oats, Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Milk, Elle & Vire, Caribbean Choice, Gustazos, Eden Gardens Wellness Resort and Spa, JP St Mary’s, Medical Associates Hospital and Medical Centre, and GraceKennedy Money Services, everyone was well taken care of with the many samplings on offer.

What would Fit 4 Life events be without the fitness challenges to win great prizes? O’Keno Walters won the GraceKennedy push-up challenge, Damion Henry topped the Blue Diamond burpees challenge; Dionne Sicard was the winner in the WATA sit-up challenge; and long-time Fit 4 Lifer Faith Browne won both the Jamaica Moves jumping jacks and Fit 4 Life squat challenges.

At the end of a very gruelling session, Jennifer Hart Creary and her team of masseuses made sure that participants went home quite relaxed.
