Trelawny constable arrested for corruption

A police constable who allegedly solicited cash from a businesswoman who hosted an event without a police permit has been charged for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.
Constable Garrett Gowans of the Falmouth Police Station was charged last Friday by members of the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA).
It is alleged that Constable Gowans solicited $20,000 from a Trelawny businesswoman who hosted an event at her premises without a permit from the police.
The businesswoman reported the matter to MOCA on October 28.
Constable Gowans was arrested by investigators from MOCA later that day after he collected $5,000 from a woman with intention to return to collect an additional $15,000.
His arrest took place at the Falmouth Police Station in the presence of a Justice of the Peace who had witnessed the transaction.
He will appear in Trelawny Parish Court on Wednesday.
