Palmyra developer dies - Trotta hailed for assistance to Jamaican children

The man who built the multibillion-dollar Palmyra Resort and Spa, Robert Trotta, is dead.

Trotta, who is credited with transforming the lives of some 11,500 Jamaican children with his 'Book4Kids' charity programme, transitioned at his home in London, England, yesterday, after a short illness.

His long-time friend, Senator Noel Sloley, confirmed the death with The Gleaner, stating that Trotta did not see Jamaica as just a place to make money.

"He fell in love with the people and the country and resided here for 12 years."

He added that the United States-born investor, who had Italian roots, was committed to the Palmyra, and had a lot of money invested in it. However, his hopes were shattered by the world financial crisis of 2008.

"He however, never gave up. In fact, his commitment went further, and that was displayed in his Books4Kids programme, which benefited more than 150 schools throughout the country."

Sloley said that Trotta's death was a big loss.
