Eleven cop Governor General's Achievement Awards in Surrey
Eleven patriots from the county of Surrey stepped up to receive Governor General's Achievement Awards yesterday for their steady commitment to excellence in academia and community service.
"Our 11 Surrey county awardees this afternoon have used their God-given talents to give back and help others in their communities, and in the process, have become peddlers of hope through the various projects that they have targeted, primarily to recognise and to help young people," said Governor General Sir Patrick Allen.
Romario White, who was one of three male recipients, is pursuing the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery programme on a University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Scholarship.
"It means that what I've done is being looked upon as excellent and is appreciated by the highest office in the island. That is something to be very proud of," the former Campion College head boy asserted.
The final-year UWI student has a keen interest in improving public healthcare delivery. White added: "We clearly see that there's a deficit in regards to our health sector. That is something I'm passionate about - universal health care for all."
Another recipient, Dorette Bernadette Abrahams, better known as 'The Paul Bogle Lady' in her community, is an experienced tourism professional on a mission to preserve the socio-cultural legacy of St Thomas.
"I've always been interested in culture and in history. It's from high school, doing the whole thing of Paul Bogle and the martyrs. I was very, very angry then at what had transpired. At times I felt, if I had the chance, I would have been fighting," Abrahams said.
She is founder and president of the Paul Bogle and the Martyrs Commemorative Lecture and president of the Albion Heights Citizens' Association.
Other awardees were Sarah Bryant, Nicole McLaren-Campbell, Shadine McLean, Simmonette Rose-Daniels, Abigail Scarlette, Dr Tameka Stephenson, Sharon Williams, George Brown, and Mario Sammes.
