A JUTC bus.

Just a few days after a seven-year-old boy was killed at the Anchovy Primary School in St James by a car driven by a teacher, a 10-year-old-boy was killed by a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus yesterday in St Catherine while on his way to school.

According to police reports, Jevon Owen Elliott, a student of Rousseau Primary School in St Andrew, boarded the bus at about 7:50 a.m. along the Gregory Park main road in Portmore, St Catherine.

"Just as the bus drove off, the passengers called out to the driver and told him that someone fell off the bus. It was a little boy, and the bus ran over him. He was taken to [the Spanish Town] Hospital by a motorist, [where] he was pronounced dead," Superintendent Clive Blair of the St Catherine South Division told The Gleaner, yesterday.

Blair has advised passengers to "be sure that they are safely inside the bus, and, if you can, take a seat".

In a press release yesterday, corporate communications manager at the JUTC Cecil Thoms said that the JUTC Accident Department was probing the incident and awaiting the findings of the police.
