Security officers from various companies and their families were yesterday celebrated on the lawns of Hope Zoo in Kingston.

The inaugural family fun day was organised by Bulwark Insurance Agent to recognise the officers for the important role they play.

Bulwark’s CEO, Gareth Hamm, said there are more than 27,000 registered personnel across the island, and though they form part of a key sector, they are often overlooked and undercelebrated.

“I have been on the grounds a lot with the security officers. They have engaged with me. They have been asking for it, and I definitely believe that they deserve it – a day dedicated to them, to treat them as special as they are,” Hamm said.

He said he hoped it would become an annual event and that they would be able to have a similar event in Montego Bay, St James, to celebrate the officers who serve the western end of the island.

Sharon Daley, a retired security officer, worked in the industry for more than 20 years. It was not her intention to enter the field as she got the job through a friend of her mother’s, but she has no regrets.

“It’s an exciting job and you meet interesting people. It has been very beneficial. We buy house, send our son to university, and now we have three grandchildren enjoying the activities today,” Daley said, adding that her husband was still employed as a security officer.

Multiple sessions on financial management, insurance, health, and self-defence were held during the day.

Asanya Bailey and her brother, Asah, were observed replicating the self-defence moves being demonstrated by an instructor.

“I knew I wouldn’t remember all the moves, so I recorded it on my phone. I think one day I’ll need to defend myself if somebody approaches me on the road or if I’m at school,” 15-year-old Asanya said.
