Holness offers ‘prosperity’ work programme

A work programme for Jamaicans, particularly those in rural Jamaica, is to be rolled out by the Andrew Holness administration.

Addressing Labourites at the Jamaica Labour Party’s 76th annual conference at the National Arena in Kingston yesterday, Holness said the Government would recruit Jamaicans to maintain, on a regular basis, the country’s roadways and verges. He said that the programme would also involve the maintenance of drains and gullies.

Persons participating in the exercise would be required to provide critical information to the Government about rainfall, as well as environmental threats, in the areas in which they operated.

The prime minister said that a significant number of rural folks would receive employment under the programme, noting that it would give them an opportunity to get “a piece of the prosperity”.

However, Holness did not provide details about the duration or cost of the work programme and when it would be introduced.
