Police expect to lay charges in case of cop who allegedly tipped off gangster

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) says it expects to lay charges following a probe it says is now underway involving a resigned police inspector accused of tipping off a gangster who was under investigation.

Yesterday, The Sunday Gleaner, reported that the senior cop had been allowed to quietly resign after a failed sting operation aimed at catching him collecting marked notes from the gangster.

However, in a statement last night, the JCF said the case is the subject of an ongoing high-level transnational investigation relating to several sensitive matters.

It also said investigators are being guided by the rule of law and advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution.

"It is our expectation that, at the conclusion of this investigation, charges will be laid against anyone who played a role in the matter, whether they are serving members of the JCF or not," said a police spokesperson.

As a result, the police said they would not put key national security assets at risk by prematurely laying charges against any person involved.

The police also said not everything that has been placed in the public domain reflect the facts of the case.

However, they said given the sensitive nature of the investigation, commenting specifically on truths and inaccuracies in the article may only serve to prejudice the proceedings.
