WESTERN BUREAU:
Vehicles traveling along Orange Street in Montego Bay, St James had to be redirected this afternoon after a light post, with electrical wires still attached, fell on top of a motorcar near the intersection with  North Street.

According to reports, shortly before 4:30 p.m., a truck driver disobeyed the traffic light and caught a low-hanging electrical wire.

The impact brought down a light pole on to a parked car.

The truck driver did not stop.

There were no reports of injuries following the mishap.

The incident comes just two days after the Transport Ministry’s Road Safety Unit reported that 435 road traffic fatalities were recorded across Jamaica for 2019, 43 more than had been tallied for 2018.

In light of those figures, Kenute Hare, the director of the Road Safety Unit, had urged motorists to drive more carefully for 2020.
