Eight-year-old boy's 'Mr Protector' wins child mascot competition

Eight-year-old Richard Small of the Bamboo Primary and Junior High School in St Ann has won the Child Protection and Family Services Agency's Mascot Design and Name competition.
Richard's entry titled 'Mr Protector' emerged the best of 91 entries.
The CPFSA will now invite bids from local companies capable of manufacturing the mascot.
If that process fails, then North Carolina stuffed toy company Grey Seal Puppets would be engaged to make the 'super hero' design in the form of a rabbit.
This morning, Richard was presented with a $20,000 cheque from Access Financial, a Samsung tablet and vouchers from Bryan’s Bookstore and Fundland as well as a basket from GraceKennedy.
His school was awarded a brand new 32-inch smart television.
"It is a tremendous feeling knowing that a small school such as Bamboo Primary and Junior High has now been recognised in such a way, thanks in no small part to the talent of young Richard,” said senior teacher Sedrick Hall.
Derrick Bartley from Cumberland All Age in Clarendon was awarded second place, while St Richards Primary’s Kayla Brown was placed third.
The 'CPFSA Design and Name Mascot Competition' targeted children ages 7-12 years old attending primary and preparatory schools.
"This is a very significant advancement because we want to get to the children and we want more self reporting and who to report it to," said Rosalee Gage Gray, the agency’s chief executive officer.
