Downswell reaches out to Central Village - Carry Me singer delivers care packages to community

The wet weather last Saturday (May 2) could not dampen the spirits of award-winning gospel artiste and ordained evangelist Kevin Downswell as he ventured into the St Catherine community of Central Village, where he spent some of his formative years, to deliver care packages to residents.

In a social media post Downswell said, “The rain started to fall and I said to myself, ‘me nah delay, me nah delay enuh because while we could say hand out the package tomorrow or another, somebody is really in need and praying God send some form of help’.”

Downswell was ordained as an evangelist in 2005, the same year he graduated from The University of the West Indies, Mona, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biochemistry. His hopes of becoming a medical doctor, however, came to a halt as he stepped into full-time ministry. This was not an easy decision, but he felt God’s calling, and with confirmation and guidance from strong mentors, he launched out by faith on a journey that would change his life and the lives of many others.

‘Cares and cheers’

Now, at the helm of Kevin Downswell Ministries and a successful career, he has been fortified with the resources and formed valuable partnerships with Cari-Med, KFC and JN Group (of which he is a brand ambassador). With these corporate entities, he was able to bring ‘cares and cheers’ to the Central Village residents by putting together care packages of flour, juices, cake mix and other essential food items. Other gifts from the JN Group and KFC meal vouchers were also included in the care packages.

The Carry Me singer told The Gleaner that Central Village means a great deal to him because, “It is one of the communities where I grew up and my mother’s church also serves this community. I wanted to give to persons who were really in need and she [his mother] was a big help in finding the individuals.”

The care packages were well-received by residents, both young and old, who turned out to meet Downswell.

“The people were elated, but as usual there were more needs than we could supply in one day. I am encouraging others, though I know we are all facing tough times, we have to look beyond ourselves and see someone else in need,” he said. “I am truly grateful to Cari-Med, KFC and JN Group for being part of this. There is much more to do but it is a start. I am especially concerned about the shut-ins who require personal attention and care.”

Downswell who has openly spoken and sang about personal challenges faced as a child, especially financially, has overcome many difficulties and is now in a position to help others. He pledged to assist where he can in the community by being a voice of hope.

The message Downswell sends is, “That God has not forgotten you. That it will turn, hold on to your faith in Him. I hope that message got across to the people of Central Village.”

The ordained minister and singer has also been busy on social media engaging the public with his talk show, ‘Conversations with Kevin Downswell’, and messages of optimism. He said that the engagement has been remarkable.
