A group of 15 Opposition Members of Parliament have written to Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips demanding a meeting by Monday to discuss the future of the People’s National Party.

There are 29 Opposition Members of Parliament.

In a letter dated May 28, 2020 the Opposition MPs said they had been awaiting an opportunity to meet with Phillips as a caucus to express solidarity since his cancer diagnosis.

They offered best wishes to Phillips as he continues treatment.

However, the MPs highlighted that there has not been a meeting of the Parliamentary group since news of Phillips’ illness in early March.

In response, Phillips said the COVID-19 pandemic has prevented the holding of meetings.

He also said he would ask People’s National Party General Secretary Julian Robinson to make contact with Manchester Central MP Peter Bunting, who was one of the signatories to the letter, to convene a Parliamentary Group meeting at the earliest possible time.

Phillips said since he did not recognise all the signatures on the letter, he would ask Bunting to convey the response to them.

In September last year, Bunting was narrowly defeated by Phillips in a leadership challenge.
