Independence Message | GG urges J’cans to reflect, recommit to nation building

Governor General Sir Patrick Allen has challenged Jamaicans to show strength and recharge the nation’s collective psyche and rally around the symbolic meaning of the national flag as the country presses through challenging times.

In a message, Sir Patrick said that the country’s 58th anniversary of Independence “is not just for the customary jubilation and festivities, but it provides an invaluable opportunity for us to reflect and recommit ourselves to the continuous and crucial task of nation building”.

He made note of recent global movements calling for social justice, racial equality, and the removal of offensive statues and iconography, highlighting that Jamaica was not left out, with his office having to address the issue after concerns were raised about one of the British insignias he wore.

“These events have reminded us of the deep divisions that continue to plague many societies and serve as reminders that we must continue to work together to overcome the inequities of our past,” he said.

He asked Jamaicans to reflect on how they can forge a future in which no one is disadvantaged, disheartened, or disenfranchised.

“That is the question for all Jamaicans today,” Sir Patrick said.
