Opposition Leader Dr Peter Phillips is calling on Jamaicans to keep playing their part in the fight against COVID-19 as the country celebrates 58 years of Independence.

In a message, he tipped his hat to health, security, and transport workers and urged continued vigilance.

Phillips said that despite “enormous challenges”, Jamaica had many things to celebrate in the nearly six decades of Independence, including the commitment to democratic principles.

He called for a redoubling of efforts to restructure the economy to achieve real growth as we celebrate the impact the island’s people and culture have had on the world.

“I believe that we still have the indomitable spirit that led our ancestors to overthrow British colonialism and lay the foundations of our Independence,” Phillips said. “They passed on the baton of hope, freedom, and justice. The baton is in our hands, and it is our job to foment a surge of national pride and optimism. Our ancestors dreamed of freedom and independence, and they achieved what seemed like impossible dreams.”

He added: “On this Independence Day, let us renew the dream of our ancestors to create a strong economy and a society which is progressive and fair.”
