St Mary Western Member of Parliament Robert Montague cuts the ribbon to officially open a newly built footbridge in Springfield, St Catherine, on Thursday, August 6.

The opening of a footbridge on the border of St Catherine and St Mary was an Independence Day gift that brought cheer to residents of Mud Lane and surrounding communities.

Residents of the farming communities of Springfield and Guy’s Hill in St Catherine and Carron Hall, St Mary, are now breathing a sigh of relief.

“We are very glad to have this bridge opened,” said Sandy Lindsay. “Persons can get to their farm easier.”

The area was historically covered in mud, which made it difficult to traverse the terrain.

“This bridge is of very great importance to this area, as in addition to farming it leads to a natural spring that never runs dry,” Lynworth Brown said.

Meanwhile, St Mary Western Member of Parliament Robert Montague, whose constituency borders St Catherine North East, said that it was a good gesture to open the facility to the public.

“I have known the challenging times that these residents face, especially to access water,” said Montague.

“Now we are giving more dignified access to the community,” Montague said.

Leslie Campbell, MP for St Catherine North East, endorsed the construction of the footbridge as a stress-reliever for the residents.

Campbell, who will not run in the next general election, has been recently appointed as minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries.
