Eye on Holness as Rowley’s PNM wins T&T election

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley’s electoral win on Monday night might be viewed by his Jamaican counterpart, Andrew Holness, as the signal of an incumbency wave that might prod him to announce a general election shortly.

Holness has for weeks teased that he will change from his Clarks Desert shoes and indicate a date for the general election, which is due in March 2021.

The Jamaican prime minister has summoned parliamentarians back to the House of Representatives, abruptly cutting short the summer recess.

Rowley declared on Monday night that his ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) was victorious in the Trinidad and Tobago general election.

Rowley said that the PNM had won 22 of the 41 seats at stake.

“It was a hard election. In the end, we prevailed ... ,” he said.

“Our platform has won and we have a mandate to do what we say we going to do.”

The Elections and Boundaries Commission did not make a preliminary or official announcement up to press time.

The other major party in the contest, the United National Congress, won the other 19 seats, Rowley said.
