Metcalfe Street to be renamed after Lorna Leslie
Metcalfe Street in the Denham Town division will be renamed in honour of former Councillor Lorna Leslie.
Leslie contested local government elections since 1981 for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) without a single defeat. She retired five years ago.
The renaming was announced at the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation’s monthly meeting on Tuesday.
The former councillor, one of the longest-serving in recent history, had a distinguished career spanning 35 years.
Councillor for the Denham Town division, Jermaine Hyatt, who moved the resolution for the renaming of the street, remembered her as revered and celebrated for her effective representation of the citizens of Denham Town.
“Metcalfe Street was not chosen randomly. Metcalfe Street is actually the street that Ms Leslie was born and she grew up on Metcalfe Street, so she had lived on Metcalfe Street not only through her tenure as councillor,” Hyatt said.
“Growing up in Denham Town, I wasn’t aware that Metcalfe Street was Metcalfe Street. We know it as Lorna Street or the councillor street, and that particular street has always been the cleanest street in Denham Town ... .”
One hundred and seventy-four residents of the Denham Town community signed a petition in support of the renaming.
