The island’s 63 members of parliament are to receive 100 tablets each to distribute in their constituency over the next few weeks.

Education Minister Fayval Williams made the disclosure yesterday as she spoke with The Gleaner at a tablet handover ceremony at the Green Park Primary School in Sandy Bay, Clarendon.

She said that Finance Minister Dr Nigel Clarke has already allocated the funds to purchase the devices and that distribution could begin by the end of the month.

Williams acknowledged that roughly 60,000 teachers across the island were in need of laptops to deliver virtual lessons in the online or blended modality, but noted that owing to budgetary constraints, not all teachers would be assisted immediately.

“Where we are right now, when we start, we won’t be able to give to everybody at the same time. We going to do as much as we can in our budget, and so far this year, we will be able to do 5,000,” Williams said, noting that the distribution will begin with teachers at the primary level with others slated to receive devices at a later time.
