Seventeen-year-old Tonique Swaby embodies hard work, perseverance, and excellence.

Recently earning an impressive 10 grade ones in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, she has exceeded her expectations and set an inspiring example for her peers.

As she transitions to the next stage of her academic journey, Swaby continues to excel both academically and in extracurricular pursuits.

“Achieving 10 grade ones in the CSEC exams is profoundly rewarding and affirming,” Swaby shared with The Gleaner. “Initially, I aimed for strong results, anticipating a mix of ones and twos. Surpassing these expectations is a testament to the dedication and perseverance I invested in my studies, reflecting both my academic commitment and resilience.’’

The subjects attained are additional mathematics, general mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, English language, English literature, Caribbean history, principles of business, and Spanish.

She graduated from Glenmuir High School in Clarendon as a member of the honour roll and was class valedictorian.

Swaby said her commitment to excellence is driven by her passion for medicine and science.

“My motivation stems from a deep-seated desire to make a meaningful impact in the world and to demonstrate my ability to overcome challenges, especially given my background,” she explained. “I am passionate about medicine and science, aiming to lay a solid foundation for a future career as a cardiothoracic surgeon and biomedical researcher.”

FOCUSED SESSION

Her academic success, she noted, is the result of disciplined study habits and a balanced lifestyle.

“My study strategies involved focused study sessions, practice exams, and leveraging techniques such as neuroplasticity and active recall,” she told The Gleaner. “I also stay engaged in extracurricular activities to maintain balance and prevent burnout. Consistent reviews and a structured study schedule have been integral to my academic success.”

Beyond academics, Swaby, a past student of Foundation Preparatory School, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and balance. At Glenmuir High, she served as president of the newspaper society, vice-president of the science club, and secretary of the Girl Guides.

She is an ambassador for Scleroderma United, a recently initiated Young Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a research intern at Rockefeller University’s Summer Science Outreach Program. Through these roles, she has had the opportunity to engage in scientific work, including research on the effects of inhibitors on COVID-19.

UNWAVERING SUPPORT

“I manage my time meticulously, creating a balanced schedule that accommodates both academic responsibilities and extracurricular interests. Being actively involved in diverse activities helps me stay motivated and develop a well-rounded skill set,” she said.

Swaby credited her family, friends, and teachers for their unwavering support.

“My parents provided essential emotional support and encouragement, while my friends offered a valuable outlet for stress relief,” she noted. “My teachers played a crucial role in guiding me through difficult topics and fostering an environment conducive to learning.”

Looking ahead, Swaby is laser-focused on her aspirations in medicine.

“I plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and public health, followed by a PhD in biochemistry, with the ultimate goal of entering the field of cardiothoracic surgery,” she shared. “This achievement enhances my academic profile and sets a strong precedent for my journey towards top medical programmes and professional success, particularly in conceptual learning and interpersonal skills.”

Swaby views her stellar performance in the CSEC exams as a milestone in what promises to be a transformative career.

“My mantra is: ‘Perseverance and passion drive progress. Embrace challenges, seek knowledge, and make a difference’,” Swaby said. “This belief guides my journey, marking my path with perseverance, a thirst for knowledge, and a commitment to creating a positive impact.”
