Fit enough for sex, fit enough for abortions

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Commendations to Christopher Harper on a well-articulated article ('Teens don't need parental consent for abortions') in The Gleaner of Friday, May 18, 2018, on the rights of adolescents regarding sexual and reproductive health.

One would have thought that since at 16, an adolescent is able to consent to sex without parental consultation and permission, that an adolescent girl aged 16 and above would need no permission from her parents regarding whether to have an abortion.

The matter is quite simple. If a teenager can legally consent to sex at 16, said teenager can elect to have an abortion, subject to the allowances of the law.

Many of the influential voices in our society are poor thinkers and cultural despots!
