Hand the dollar a parachute

Published:Sunday | June 10, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A family member of mine wanted to exchange some currency with me the other day. He was charging me a rate of J$135 to US$1. I refused and asked if he had bumped his head. Later on at a bank, I was shocked to see the rate in the region of J$130 to US$1.

Explanation needed

The minister of finance, Dr Nigel Clarke, needs to explain to the people of Jamaica why the dollar is sliding despite him and other members of his Government telling us every day how strong the Jamaican economy is. If it is that business people and investors are confident about Jamaica's future, why, then, is the dollar sliding at such a rate?

If this continues, prices will rise, and things will get harder for many more people. I don't believe I am panicking, but something just doesn't seem right at all. We need to know what is going on.
