Letter of the Day | Thank you, and sorry

Published:Tuesday | June 19, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Allow me to express appreciation to letter writers Javon Mowatt - in encouraging me and National Integrity Action (NIA) "to remain a bastion of impartiality and unimpeachable integrity" - and Zukie Jarrett - for the concern that NIA "has been ... silent regarding the whole Manchester Municipal Corporation scandal". NIA highly values constructive criticism and alertness such as this. It helps to keep us on the straight and narrow path.

However, regarding the Manchester Municipal Corporation, in the very same presentation from which The Sunday Gleaner took the headline 'Punish Petrojam wrongdoers - Munroe' and just a few seconds earlier in my address, I said, "We must ... uphold one law for all, big or small. Towards this end, I give every encouragement and ask you [the seminar participants] to do the same, to MOCA in investigating allegations of corruption in the Manchester Municipal Corporation and to C-TOC in dismantling the gangs, as well as going after the gangsters whether they reside in Flankers, St James, or in Norbrook, St Andrew."

Sorry that The Gleaner did not report on this part of the presentation, but we also value freedom of the press, which allows the editor to choose what to publish.

Your readers can be assured that with their vigilance and help, NIA shall uphold good-governance principles of accountability, transparency and the combat of corruption without fear or favour, with independence and impartiality.
