Stop whining and phase out plastic

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Plastic scandal bags and plastic soda bottles should be banned in Jamaica as a starting point to significantly improving Jamaica's environment and ecosystem.

In their place should be what was produced/provided and used/bought, on a wide scale, by Jamaican manufacturers and consumers, respectively, in a bygone era, namely, paper grocery bags and glass bottles.

Sometimes, we have to take one step back to move two steps forward. To their credit, Jamaica's three patty giants, Tastee, Juici and Mother's, have, from the start, sold their patties in brown paper bags. Likewise, KFC, Burger King, Wendy's, Domino's, Pizza Hut and Popeye's should be commended for packaging their meals in paper and/or cardboard.

More recently, and to their credit, Island Grill made the transition from plastic to cardboard in packaging their meals.

So, to wrap up, I submit to the yet-to-be-converted local manufacturers and food industry players that the 'Bigga' their investment in providing consumers with environmentally friendly containers to house their numerous and varied products, the more respected and admired their companies will become.

Additionally, their profits, in all likelihood, will increase, significantly, after making that positive, praiseworthy and progressive leap.
