Not so, Mr Matthews

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In some ways, your letter dated Tuesday, July 10, hints of a couple of things and unlike Ms Tomlinson's appearance, those hints are quite unattractive. Your premise, though well intentioned no doubt, is revealing the ugly underbelly of misogyny and religious over zealousness, which have affixed themselves to your thinking.

It is your view that The Gleaner, by featuring Ms Tomlinson and her current partnership and pregnancy has erred and is in need of "repentance", mainly for the sinful act of devaluing the newspaper and promoting someone, who by your estimation, is not of high moral character. The denigration even went further to label Ms Tomlinson's unborn child, as illegitimate.

It is interesting to note, that in your haste to be holier than thou, you neglected to note that The Gleaner was in fact doing the right thing, which was to facilitate views, the same newspaper which highlighted Ms Tomlinson, gave your letter, as repugnant as it was, printed space. You were right about one thing, Jamaica has serious problems, but I sincerely doubt that attacking Ms Tomlinson, or The Gleaner for that matter, is a solution. You, sir, owe the young lady an apology.
