Traction on Peach Beach public access

Published:Sunday | September 16, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Discovery Bay Community Development Committee (CDC) wishes to thank all those who helped with the 'Save Our Beaches ' campaign to ensure that Jamaicans continue to have free beach access to Peach Beach.

The support from those who demonstrated, The Gleaner, IRIE FM, in particular, radio and television talk-show hosts, columnists and those who raised awareness through social media created a groundswell that resulted in our voices being heard by the Government.

The prime minister has given his word that in September 2018, he will be starting the legislative process to have free beach access across the island.

Minister Vaz has also made several public announcements endorsing that of the PM and has given assurance that the Government will shortly be upgrading Peach Beach and then the adjoining Fishermen's Beach. He is in dialogue with the CDC regarding a collaborative beach project to ensure that Peach Beach is a clean, affordable public beach.

Discovery Bay residents say they are cautiously optimistic as they await the upgrade. However, the newly created Beach Management Committee is confident that Minister Vaz will fulfil his promise.
