Styrofoam ban should be sooner than later

Published:Thursday | September 20, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The ban on styrofoam, single-use plastic bags and other plastic items as of January 2019 is a move in the right direction and should be supported by all and sundry.

These bags are built from non-biodegradable materials that are detrimental to our environment.

It might be hard on the companies and restaurants who use them daily, but for the betterment of all our people, it's a step in the right direction. It will be a tall ask for the consumers, who will be expected to pay much more for a meal.

Plastic bottles are the chief culprits destroying the environment. We need to collaborate with environmental watchdogs like the National Solid Waste Management Authority and the National Environment and Planning Agency to take a stand against plastic pollution.
