Change yourself before changing others

Published:Thursday | January 17, 2019 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As a 21st-century youth living in a society that is influenced by a plethora of factors, including the media, technology and celebrities of all kinds, I have realised that some individuals have allowed all these factors to dictate who they are and who they are to become.

At one point in my life, I had allowed some of these factors to even hinder me from accomplishing and pursuing my dreams, aspirations and goals, because I thought that being the 'ideal female' meant that I had to 'do what the majority is doing', BUT NOT ANYMORE.

If we are to make a difference in this world, we must first be different, because change leads to change. We cannot say that "we want a better Jamaica and a better world", yet our personal attitudes and morals are unbecoming of a godly and ethical human being. If we are hesitant to change, why ask for change?

Some individuals are parsimonious in their manner, yet they want to see a society where people are generous and kindhearted. I constantly hear persons say "the country nah get better" ad nauseam, but how can the country get better if you, the reader, refuse to improve?

I urge you today to stop blaming the diaspora, and start blaming yourselves, because if you want to see change in your country, or even the world, You must first change.
