Workers have no rights in the BPO sector

Published:Saturday | February 9, 2019 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I write in solidarity with the letter publish on February 7, 2019, ‘Unfairly fired from BPO’.

I have been working with the BPO sector for almost five years. I can easily say Jamaican labour laws have no teeth.

These are some of the things I see happening in the BPO sector:

If you call in sick for just one day, you are required to provide a doctor’s note within 24 hours.

Some centres only allow us 30 minutes lunchtime.

You are dismissed without reasonable cause; there is nothing called job security.

They have attractive incentive/bonus, but I dare you to meet it.

There is lack of growth and promotion.

Cronyism worse than the mother and father of all scandals, Petrojam.

I can categorically state that the turnover rate is very outrageous and I implore the trade unions to seek an avenue with the sector.
