We are all equal

THE EDITOR, Sir:

International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8, spoke to creating a gender-balanced world.

Gloria Steinem, world-renowned feminist, journalist, lecturer, and activist, once said that “the story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organisation, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights“.

Mr Damion Crawford, a contender for the East Portland seat, really upset me for vilifying Mrs Ann-Marie Vaz on the basis of the colour she was born with and perceived social class.

The reason for this is, I have friends, acquaintances, and family members with her hue who came out of deep poverty.

However, things came to a head on Nomination Day when in an interview, he stated categorically, “The opponent is not my equal.”

Mr Crawford, all God’s children are equal, none more valuable than the other. Take a page in humility from Dr Nigel Clarke, who, in addressing the Parliament recently, highlighted the institutions attended, but he never stated the degrees earned or his being a Rhodes Scholar.

Respect, humility, and love for humanity are key ingredients in going forward.
