Suggestion to ease Portmore toll road congestion

Published:Wednesday | April 17, 2019 | 12:17 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Since the opening of the Chesterfield Road in St Andrew, there has been congestion on the Portmore toll road in the mornings. Children must wake by 3:30 a.m. to leave home by 4:30 a.m. to be on time for school. Children are left at school to the mercy of either the watchmen or security guards until their teachers arrive.

Parents have to reach work so they can’t stay with the children. Help, Mr Calvin Allen, assistant commissioner of police; Mr Stephen Shaw, director of communications, National Works Agency; and the toll operators.

Here is a simple suggestion that could help the situation. The right-hand lane coming from Kingston could be converted to a single lane going to Kingston after exiting the toll booth where the ring barriers are. The traffic would exit this lane where the paper factory is on Marcus Garvey Drive. This period could be from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on weekdays. God bless you all for looking at this solution.
