‘Run’ out of patience

THE EDITOR, Sir:

For some time now, 5K walk/runs have become an avenue for a number of organisations to raise money for some well-needed charities, hospitals, schools and the like. These 5Ks have also been a medium to promote a healthy lifestyle among a growing concern of obesity in our country.

I am all for 5Ks, but I am quite displeased with the inconvenience of those persons who are not participating in the 5Ks. On a number of occasions you just ‘run up’ into a barricade, with no idea as to what alternative route you can take to get you to your destination.

I know that the organisers of these events must get permission to have these races, so I believe that a part of the process should be to inform the public through the press and appropriate signage on the public roads of the upcoming inconveniences.

Commendations must be given to Sagicor, Guardian Life and Digicel, who have consistently made the public aware, days in advance, of what roads will be inaccessible due to their runs. This must be a requirement for all organisations that are doing these 5Ks.

So while some are doing 5Ks, 10Ks and the like, the rest of us would like to be OK on the roads.
