Decline of UWI College Common housing

Published:Monday | June 17, 2019 | 12:19 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I wish to bring to your attention the issue of the deterioration of the College Common accommodation offered to University of the West Indies (UWI) lecturers and senior administrative staff.

Notable signs of this are irregular and inadequate removal of trash and lawn trimmings, an abundance of rodents and mosquitoes, long delays in maintenance, many vacant houses, and more recently, regular disruption of electricity for up to 12 continuous hours (most of the outages are planned, but with no or inadequate notice given).

EASILY SEEN

Many of these glaring issues can be easily seen when driving through the compound, which, sadly, could be so beautiful, but is now in a state of horrible deterioration.

The electricity woes in June have resulted in disruption not only for College Common residents, but it greatly impacted the entire UWI information technology services, resulting in the lack of wi-Fi, email, and other IT-dependent matters that also greatly affected the services of the University Hospital of the West Indies.

The current situation is untenable and an embarrassment for a university that boasts of being in the top five per cent of universities worldwide.
