We need police death squad

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I have read the police commissioner’s crime plan several times. I see nothing in it that will have gunmen quaking in their boots. There’s no special gang focus, no unpredictable policing measures. Just the same old.

And with murders now picking up pace, there is a case for a death squad – an elite group of police charged with ‘eliminating’ the known violence producers.

We all know the gunmen. They even pose on Instagram and Facebook with their illegal weapons. Yet, if and when they are arrested, they often walk free, as no one is willing to testify.

And if the police happen to shoot them, our human-rights lobbyists and the Independent Commisssion of Investigations are relentless in their advocacy for criminals’ rights.

Most Jamaicans are more than willing to suspend some rights to bring an end to this murderous spree. The 1,200 people murdered last year would have gladly given up some of their rights to save themselves from a gunman’s bullet. So, instead of vilifying the police in the Clarendon death squad, we probably should be congratulating them.
