What happened with Peter Bunting’s crime plan?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

On Tuesday, February 21, 2012, Peter Bunting introduced his five- year crime plan to the nation. He promised to get murders down to 321 in 2017 by reducing them by 134 annually for the next five years.

One thousand one hundred and twenty-five murders were committed in 2011 and 1,192 in 2015. By November of 2015, Peter Bunting said he was implementing a new crime plan where the country would see heavy military deployment.

Peter Bunting doesn’t have any moral authority on crime strategies and plans. In the past, he said it was the dismantling of the Shower Posse in Tivoli that caused the murder rate to go down and not the states of emergency. Clearly, without a declared state of emergency, disrupting that gang activity would’ve been impossible.

St Andrew South Police Division’s homicide tally from 2004-2018:

2018 148 murders

2017 160 murders

2016 92 murders

2015 76 murders

2014 63 murders

2013 104 murders

2012 101 murders

2011 100 murders

2010 154 murders

2009 240 murders

2008 223 murders

2007 209 murders

2006 187 murders

2005 270 murders

2004 242 murders

Clearly, the 2010 Tivoli state of emergency reduced the tally in this murderous police division. For Peter Bunting to vote against states of emergency speaks volumes about his thinking.
