Walk good, Noel Dexter

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Little Theatre Movement of Jamaica expresses deep regret at the passing of Noel Dexter, one of Jamaica’s noted composers and musical directors.

Noel Dexter graciously shared his time and talent with the annual national pantomime, both onstage and offstage. Noel was a member of cast in the 1961-62 LTM pantomime Banana Boy. He then went on to create music for several productions, including Mansong, Sipple Silver, River Mumma and the Golden Table, King Root, and Man Deh Yah. His works reflected his vast knowledge and appreciation of Jamaica’s folk culture which enriched the legacy of the annual pantomime. Dexter continued his association with the LTM through his support of the Pantomime Company, conducting workshops on vocal performance. He was patient and giving to all who he worked with. He had time for the novices and the experienced singers, encouraging and supporting them as he taught.

He generously included songs from pantomimes as part of the repertoire of the University Singers while he was their leader and director of music at the UWI, Mona, giving new life to a number of songs which are now considered ‘contemporary folk songs’ and are performed in schools islandwide.

The LTM extends sincere condolences to his family and friends. Walk good, Brother Noel.
